SPORT SQUAD HISTORY

The Hampton LSC Comp Squad is a proud team of kids, parents and members who value the camaraderie, leadership and great life skills our Club has to offer. Whilst we compete with tenacity, we are not ribbon-chasers - we value team and celebrate individual accomplishments, whether that be making it through the swim for the first time, doing the long run without walking or managing to get through the break on your board.

Over the past eight years, the HLSC Nippers Competition Squad has grown from a handful of children to one hundred. We are grateful to the founders of the Comp Squad, Chris Eastman, and Leonie and Phil Mawkes (pictured below), whose daughters Taylor and Jamie, now compete as Seniors. It is also rumoured Leonie will be competing as a Master for us in 2016!

Thanks should also be extended to Competition Squad Grand Poo Bah for the last few years, Susie Massey. She and her team (Michael Pratt, Sarah Cameron and Sam Dwyer), carried on from the Mawkes's brilliant beginnings to shape the squad into what it is today (pictured below). In 2015, Sport was allocated its own seat on the Board, and Michael Pratt nominated and was elected as the first Director of Sport. Sam, Susie and Sarah continue to contribute as part of the Comp Squad team, with new or more formalised recruits Maryann Hetherington, Owen Smith, Jeff Walton, Peter Costello Tiffany Griffin, Caroline Webster and Alex Walton.

The 2015/ 2016 Season will see some exciting new initiatives. Rescue & Resuscitation will grow from its humble beginnings in 2015. We are going to offer training and competition in First Aid for our Seniors, as well as contest the Champion Lifesaver and Patrol Competitions in Seniors and Open. We also have a dozen excited parents (and another dozen fearful) who have committed to having a go as Masters Competitors at the 2016 State Championships in February, as well as the Endurance Championships in November. We also intend to support competitors who wish to compete in the Youth (U13 and U14) or Senior Australian Titles.

Finally, the HLSC IRB Team (also known as the "Skunks"), has just finished competing over its second winter season, performing dare-devil acrobatics in the IRBs. This team is ably headed up by Jas Lawrence (once a nipper herself) and Carol Lawrence. We look forward to seeing more of those shots of the IRBs airborne! Nippers can look forward to turning 16 and being eligible to be in this team as well.
